ethics rawk - 10:41 a.m. 02.25.2005
Today was a special day in Ethics. Today was a day when Danny neither shuts up, nor backs down. As Jes put it, every day that I'm with her.

So, the class starts with some sort of discussion about music, which I take a part of. Unimportant, but whenever I get started talking in a class, it's over. I don't stop.

The primary problem with AI recognizing human speech is their lack of real world understanding, and ambiguity in speech. Our professor's example is "Johnny hit the boy with a broken leg". He proceeds to explain that either Johnny or the boy who was hit can be the one with a broken leg. To which I quickly chime in, "OR, Johnny simply hit the boy.... with a broken leg." Assorted ughs and laughs.

One guy is doing a paper on video games. Specifically, he's doing a paper on why video games are bad. Apparently, when doing an action in a video game, your brain synapses fire as if you were actually doing the action. Think mental training in basketball, as opposed to physical training - picturing the action. My argument that this isn't behavioral training; it's physical training; training to make the motion, not training to want to do it.
"Look, dude. If this were true, I swear to god I'd know level three magic already." Then, to my professor, "It is ok if I write my paper directly contrary to Tom's? Like, I don't mean: He says video games are bad; I say video games are good. I was thinking more like: He says video games are bad. I say Tom is a dumbass."

Finally, we somehow get to talking about anime, how feminine characters and good characters are drawn with larger faces and eyes. One girl explains; one petite, has-never-spoken-before girl, "Yea, and evil characters usually look more mature, and have narrower slantier eyes. That's why us anime fan girls lust for them so much."
I just bust up laughing in the middle of class. No one else at all. So, of course, everyone turns to look at me.
"What?! Did you guys not just hear that?"

Yes, I too have a class on ethics. I'm all philosophy-like, like Jessie. My class, however, talks about anime, porn, and video games. Comp Sci majors are superior stock.
